Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Consort Black Currant is a variety we grow that is productive and ripens early compared to some other black currants. Also known as Prince Consort, this variety produces small berries that are commonly made into jams and are popular in Europe. Currants are easy to propagate. We use netting to protect them from birds, which are attracted to the early-ripening fruit. The plants fruit on second-year wood, and these specific berries have a milder taste than some other black currants we have tried.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Consort Black Currant is an upright, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub that reaches a mature height and spread of 3 to 6 feet. It features aromatic, lobed green foliage and produces clusters of small white flowers in spring, followed by medium-sized, glossy black berries in mid-summer. The tart fruit is used for jams, jellies, juices, and baking. Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 3 through 8, this variety performs best in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. It is immune to white pine blister rust.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions.
