Rooting Mulberry Cuttings -  Success Rates

We propagate mulberry trees to build our orchard and to sell trees and fruit locally. Since rooting success of mulberry cuttings can vary greatly between cultivars, we thought it would be useful to share our data. Our data below is not scientific and we have experienced failure where many others have had success. As we collect more data, we will update the list.

In general we root our dormant mulberry cuttings in a peat/perlite mix in 9" tall pots. We use rooting hormone and wrap the exposed top in parafilm for humidity control. Then we put them on bottom heat and try to maintain at least two weeks without light. Attempts noted with an asterisk (*) indicate up to four weeks without light. During winter 2022/2023 we experienced higher sucess rates by leaving potted cuttings in darkness for a longer period of time.

UPDATE (9/16/24): Our efforts are focused on growing out our orchard so we haven't gathered much propagation data over the last year.  You can still find our previous data below. We hope to pick up this effort again soon. In the meantime, we invite you to see our progress on building out our mulberry orchard and all the successes and failures we've learned from.  Here are some of our recent videos...
