Typing our Mulberry Cuttings

All of our products are grown from trees on our farm. We don't sell anything that comes from a third party. We use the original name of our source material and try to provide enough photos and videos of the plant or fruit for you to confirm type through your own research. Unfortunately we can't provide genetic testing or an extended pedigree. But if you have any questions about a specific product, please contact us.

Location Specific Cultivar Information

Our farm is in maritime pacific northwest zone 8A. Our winter cold temperatures will occasionally dip into the low 20's and slightly lower. The mother plants of all our cuttings survive unprotected outdoors here. Because we don't have any experience with growing our trees in other zones, we don't provide specific growing information for other locations. Please refer to local sources to get information and make a decision on what will work in your area.

How we harvest and store our cuttings

All of our cuttings sold in winter are harvested after they go dormant. Immediately after the harvest, we store them in a climate controlled cooler at 37F. If we do sell green cuttings in the summer, they are cut, packaged and shipped out the following day.

Some Specifics on our Mulberry Cuttings

  • Dormancy for hardwood cuttings normally begins in late November. Soon after, we will begin harvesting our dormant, hardwood cuttings. During the growing season, we harvest the cuttings only when ordered.

  • Our cuttings are generally first year wood at least eight inches long and will have three or more well-formed buds. We aim for a diameter that is greater than 3/8", but that can sometimes be much, much greater.

  • While we primarily propagate mulberry trees by rooting cuttings, we do know that many also prefer to propagate by grafting. Since diameter of the cuttings can vary greatly, it can be difficult to meet specific requirements for grafting. If you plan to graft, mulberry cutting product pages may include a diameter listing but if not, please contact us and we will strive to send you a cutting less than 1/2" for grafting... if available.

How we process your order

We only sell when we are ready to ship. When you order during the dormant season sale, we pull your sticks from our cooler. We then pack your order in a cardboard box keep it in a cool location until we transport it to the Post Office. For cuttings sold in the summer we harvest and pack on the same day for shipping the following day. We only ship once a week on Mondays (or Tuesdays if Monday is a holiday) to avoid having plant material spend the weekend in the postal system. For more information on how we ship, see our shipping policies.
