Propagating Grapevine Cuttings: A Step-by-Step Guide to 80% Success Rate

The process begins with storing cuttings at 37°F for about two months before preparing them for soil. Key steps include making clean cuts at the nodes, using a moist peat moss and perlite potting mix, and applying rooting hormone to the base.

To encourage growth, the cuttings are placed on bottom heat between 65 and 70°F while the tops remain exposed to cooler air. After two weeks of heat and subsequent outdoor acclimation, the cuttings are checked for root development and moved into final pots. This approach focuses on careful temperature management and minimal root disturbance during the up-potting phase to ensure healthy, thriving grape vines.
