How to Propagate Grapes from Hardwood Cuttings: A Step-by-Step Guide

The process involves selecting healthy, dormant stems and identifying live tissue characterized by a pithy, greenish-white interior. It is crucial to keep track of the cutting's orientation, as roots will only develop from the bottom end. After cutting the stems to include several nodes, rooting hormone is applied to the base before sticking them into a well-draining potting medium.

The results after four months show a high success rate for both red and green grape varieties. By May, most cuttings developed significant root systems and new leaf growth with minimal maintenance beyond occasional watering in a greenhouse environment. Once the cuttings have established strong roots and shoots, they are ready to be transplanted into pots or directly into the garden. This method offers a simple and effective way to expand a vineyard.
