Ohio Nonpareil Apple Medium Tote Bag

Fruit:  Apple
Cultivar:  Ohio Nonpareil
Location:  Minerva, Stark County, Ohio, United States
Year:  1897
Artist: Bertha Heiges

The Painting:  This is based on a watercolor from the USDA Pomological Watercolor Collection. These were used to document fruit and nut varieties in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lithographs of these watercolor paintings were created to illustrate USDA bulletins, yearbooks, and other publications distributed to growers and gardeners across America. Painted imperfections depicted by the artist, such as scab and rot, have been maintained from the original. The image used here has been cropped as well as edited to remove signs of age such as specks, mold, and paper stains.
